About Cancún, Quintana Roo
In the 1970s Mexico's ambitious tourism planners decided to outdo Acapulco with a brand new, world-class resort in the Yucatán Peninsula. The place they chose was a deserted sand spit offshore from the little fishing village of Puerto Juárez. Its name was Cancún.
In the last two decades Cancún has grown from a tiny jungle village into one of the world's best-known holiday resorts. The Mexican government sunk vast sums into landscaping and infrastructure, yielding straight, well-paved roads, drinkable tap water and great swathes of sandy beach.

Practical recommendations
In this period of the year Cancun has a hot weather 35-38°C (95-102°F) during day and 25-28°C (77-84°F) during night. Occasionally it can rain, but May is not hurricanes season. Please take your previsions if you stay long periods outdoors wearing comfortable footwear, having good quantity of water or refreshments with you, wear sunglasses and use sun protection cream. The use of a hat or cap is also a good idea for walking long distances.
The taxi inside of the tourist zone of Cancun costs about 150-200 pesos the ride (13-17 USD, ca.11 pesos / 1 USD). Please ask for the price before using the Taxi service, in some cases the price can be negotiated. If you ask for a taxi in the lobby of the hotel usually it causes an extra charge; therefore to pickup a taxi directly in the street is cheaper and recommended. If you prefer, there is a good public bus service (24 hrs) for moving into the tourist zone. There are just two companies, and these two companies go through the tourist zone. There is a bus stop just in front of the Hilton Hotel.
Tips in Mexico are not included in the services like restaurants, bars etc. It is normal (traditional) to add a 10% to 15% depending in your opinion for the quality of the service.
